Covert Network: Progressives, the International Rescue Committee, and the CIA by Eric Thomas Chester,
Covert Network: Progressives, the International Rescue Committee, and the CIA by Eric Thomas Chester,
This book tells the story of the International Rescue Committee (IRC), the largest nonsectarian refugee relief agency in the world. Founded in the 1930s by socialist militants, the IRC attracted the support of renowned progressives such as Eleanor Roosevelt, Norman Thomas, and Reinhold Niebuhr. But by the 1950s it had been absorbed into the American foreign policy establishment. Throughout the Cold War, the IRC was deeply involved in the volatile confrontations between the two superpowers and participated in an array of sensitive clandestine operations. The IRC thus evolved from a small organization of committed activists to a global operation functioning as one link in the CIA's covert network.

International Refugee Organization - The International Refugee Organization (IRO) was founded in 1946 to deal with the massive refugee problem created by World War II. It was a United Nations specialized agency and took over many of the functions of the earlier United Nations Relief and Rehabilitation Administration.

Islamic Relief - Islamic Relief Worldwide (IRW) is an international relief and development organization, dedicated to alleviating the suffering of the world's poorest people. The organization has full-time offices in 25 countries and provides assistance in over 30 countries worldwide.

Operation Blessing International - Founded on November 14, 1978, the Operation Blessing International Relief and Development Corporation (OBI) is a non-profit humanitarian organization based in Virginia Beach, Virginia. It is dedicated to alleviating human need and suffering in the United States and around the world.

Heifer International - Heifer International is a non-profit charitable organization based in Little Rock, Arkansas, dedicated to relieving global hunger and poverty. American farmer Dan West, its founder, was serving as a Church of the Brethren relief worker in Spain during the Spanish Civil War and became frustrated that he was forced to decide how to allocate a very limited amount of food aid (see rationing, triage).
